CHIEF OF TRAINING AND OPERATIONS
Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira hails from Lagos Island in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria. On completion of his secondary education at the Nigerian Military School Zaria in 1987, he was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna in 1988 as a member of 40th Regular Course. Rear Admiral Ferreira was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy (NN) as a Sub-Lieutenant on in Sep 93 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and was awarded the Indian Shield as the best graduating cadet in naval operations. The very senior officer belongs to the Executive branch of the NN and is also a qualified Helicopter and Instructor Pilot type rated on the AB206, A109E and AW139 helicopters. Rear Admiral Ferreira also holds a Master of Arts Degree in Maritime Security.
In the course of his career, the senior officer attended the following courses: Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course, Young Officers Course in Naval Intelligence and Ab Initio Flying Training at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria. Thereafter, Adm Ferreira attended the rotary wing conversion course and A109E Type Rating at AgustaWestland Italy. He also attended the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji as well as Senior Staff Course at the Naval Command College, Nanjing China in 2004 and 2006 respectively. In furtherance of his career as a pilot, he attended the Instrument Flight Training and AW139 Helicopter Type Rating at AgustaWestland Italy. Thereafter, he attended the Instructor Pilot’s training at Bristow Helicopters, USA. Finally, Admiral Ferreira was nominated to attend the National Defence Course at the National Defence College (NDC) Cairo, Egypt from July 2014 to June 2015 and was awarded Fellow of the Defence College (fdc).
Admiral Ferreira has held several appointments during his career; these include Watch Keeping Officer NNS AMBE, 2ic P219 at NNS UMALOKUN, Staff Officer Grade 2 Strategic Naval Intelligence at the Directorate of Naval Intelligence Naval Headquarters, WKO NNS AYAM at Calabar, and Flag Lt to Chief of Operations NHQ. Other appointments include OIC P303 tendered to NNS OLOKUN, Lt Cdr Flying at Naval Air Station Ojo, Station Air Commander and Base Operations Officer Naval Air Station Ojo. The Admiral was also the Executive Officer NNS BURUTU, Executive Officer Naval Air Base Ojo and Assistant Director Air Operations Training and Operations Branch NHQ. Thereafter the senior officer held shore command appointment as Commander Naval Air Base Ojo prior to NDC. On completion of NDC, he was appointed Assistant Director Foreign Liaison Desk, Policy and Plans Branch NHQ and later as Commanding Officer Nigerian Navy Ship OKPABANA. Also, RAdm Ferreira was appointed to the Defence Intelligence Agency as Nigeria’s Defence Adviser to India with concurrent accreditation to Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, South Korea and Singapore which was his last appointment before his appointment to the Naval Headquarters Abuja as Deputy Director Career Planning at the Navy Secretary Branch. Subsequently, on promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral in 2021, he was appointed the Director of Manning at the Naval Headquarters. In May 2023, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira was appointed as the Commander Joint Task Force South South Operation Delta Safe and is responsible for the protection of all oil and gas infrastructure in 10 states in the Niger Delta region. Most recently in Feb 24, the Admiral was appointed to NHQ as the Chief of Training and Operations.
Rear Admiral EO Ferreira is decorated with the Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, and the Grand Service Star. He is also decorated with Passed Staff College, Operation Harmony Medal, Operation Tsare Teku, as well as Nigeria’s Silver and Golden Jubilee medals. He also is decorated with the NN Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. In addition, Rear Admiral Ferreira was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Medal for exemplary flying in the Nigerian Navy Air Arm and the Command at Sea Badge for successful command of Nigerian Navy Ship OKPABANA. Also, the senior officer earned a Commendation from the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command and was also awarded the Chief of the Naval Staff’s Commendation Medal for the successful search and rescue of MT MAXIMUS which was hijacked in 2016 by pirates off the coast of Sao Tome and Principe. Admiral Ferreira also received a Letter of Commendation from the Chief of the Naval Staff for authoring a book titled Victory with Honour which is an account of his command experience onboard NNS OKPABANA. Also, a Letter of Commendation from the Chief of the Naval Staff was awarded to Admiral Ferreira for drafting a Commanding Officers Handbook for officers appointed to command seagoing ships.
The senior officer also belongs to some professional bodies which include Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation, Member Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), Member of the United States Naval Institute and Member Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association. Rear Admiral Ferreira is an alumnus of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Coventry University UK and the Harvard Kennedy School USA where he undertook three Executive Education courses in National and International Security, Senior Managers in Government and Leadership Decision Making programs in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. He was also awarded an Executive Certificate in Public Leadership on completion of the 3 programs from the Harvard Kennedy School. Rear Admiral Ferreira enjoys writing articles and listening to music and he is married and blessed with 2 sons.
